Jane Fonda
Her father, Henry Fonda, became a movie icon for portraying Tom Joad. Jane Fonda has ofttimes spoken of how the themes of Steinbeck’s Grapes of Wrath long ago instilled in her the need for justice, for fairness, for equality. A best-selling author, an Oscar-winning actress, and a long-standing activist, Fonda has championed these themes for six decades through her art and activism. Because of this legacy, on Wednesday, September 13, she received the John Steinbeck Award at a Climate One program, live from the Herbst Theatre in San Francisco. Before a capacity crowd of 928, Fonda was interviewed by Greg Dalton, founder of Climate One. The Steinbeck Award was presented by Daniel Rivers, executive director of the Cox Center for Steinbeck Studies.
